Powerful Endings

Your ending is what readers remember. A weak summary makes your whole piece forgettable. A powerful final image, reflection, or moment echoes in the marker's mind long after they've moved to the next paper.

The Last Impression

Same story, completely different impact:

Forgettable

"And that's how my summer ended. It was really good."

Memorable

"Grandma's hand stayed raised until she was just a speck on the platform."

Why Your Ending Matters

Psychologists call it the peak-end rule: we judge experiences largely by how they end. This applies to stories too. A weak ending can undermine great writing that came before. A powerful ending can elevate good writing to memorable.

Your ending doesn't need to resolve everything. It needs to resonate. The best endings leave readers with an image, emotion, or thought that stays with them.

The Echo Test

Read your ending aloud. Does it echo? Does it leave you with something to think about or feel? If it just stops without resonance, you need a stronger ending.

Types of Powerful Endings

Here are five proven ways to end with impact.

Image Ending

"Grandma's hand stayed raised until she was just a speck on the platform."

Memorable visual

Short Punch Ending

"One step at a time."

Emotional impact

Callback Ending

"The marble was still there—chipped now, but still mine."

Satisfying closure

Reflection Ending

"The words I didn't say sit heavy on my tongue."

Makes reader think

Small Action Ending

"She put the extra plate away. We ate in silence."

Shows meaning

Before & After Examples

See how rewriting your ending transforms the whole piece.

Powerful Image (1/5)

Technique: End with a powerful image that sticks in the reader's mind.

Weak Ending

"That was my first day at the new school. I was nervous but it turned out okay."

Powerful Ending

"The bell rang for home time. I slung my bag over my shoulder, and for the first time, someone waved goodbye."

Endings to Avoid

These weak endings signal inexperienced writing to markers.

  • "And that's how I learned that [moral]..." (preachy summary)
  • "And we all lived happily ever after..." (fairy tale cliché)
  • "I woke up and it was all a dream..." (frustrating cop-out)
  • "And that's my story about..." (boring recap)
  • "In conclusion..." or "To sum up..." (essay-style endings)

Why NSW Markers Notice This

Structure Score

A strong ending directly impacts your Structure & Organization score. It shows you can craft a complete, satisfying piece—not just run out of words.

Content Score

Powerful endings demonstrate Content & Ideas depth. They show you can convey meaning through image and moment, not just state it directly.

The Last Sentence Check

Read your last sentence in isolation. Does it work on its own as a powerful closing thought? If it's explaining or summarizing, rewrite it as an image, action, or reflection.

Try It Yourself

Rewrite this weak ending with more power and resonance.

Transform This

"And that's how my summer ended. It was really good."

Hints: End with an image, not a summary • Show emotion through action • Leave the reader with a picture

Pro Tips for Better Endings

1. Write Your Ending Early

Know where you're heading before you get there. Some writers write the ending first, then work backwards. This ensures your story builds toward something powerful.

2. Connect to Your Opening

The strongest endings echo the beginning. If you opened with a marble, can your ending reference that marble? This creates satisfying circular structure.

3. End on Action, Not Explanation

Show a final moment instead of explaining what you learned. "Mum put the extra plate away" is more powerful than "I realized we would be okay without Dad."

4. Trust Your Reader

You don't need to spell out the meaning. If you've shown the story well, readers will understand. Let them feel the ending instead of being told what to feel.
